Reading books has reduced dramatically in today’s youth. Kids who read books are treated as socially incapable nerds. What is your take on this topic?
My happiness knows no bound if someone gifts me a magical read or when I stumble upon a book which carries me into different world. For me happiness is books, but that’s me. Had always been me. None of my siblings shared my liking or anyone around me. It was only in college when I found a friend who was an avid reader like myself.
Reading requires a lot of creativity on your own part. You need to visualize and create scenes and characters. I would say more than 50 % of ‘public‘ is lazy and prefers video format. You don’t need to exercise your brain, everything is served in a platter, ready to be taken in. If you compare today to 20 years back, then book reading has indeed been reduced dramatically. I would say the reduction is directly proportional to increase in number of ways of recreation. Nowadays one has access to so many things music, videos, movies, games, social networking etc. Children have ‘n’ number of choices to refresh their mood hence this dramatic reduction. I have always heard that book reading is a habit but have never agreed to it. Habit to me is something as mundane as brushing teeth whereas book reading is a liking for books just like some people like listening to music. You cannot make a habit out of it. Me and my brother were raised in the same environment but I became addicted to books yet he remained untouched. The lazy fellow always asked me to tell stories even though I was younger to him.
As far as book reading nerds equation is concerned I would say it’s a bit of exaggeration. I used to read novels most of the time, in the classroom, in my leisure time, they were and are like a drug to me. Though I don’t remember being called as a nerd for this however, one girl did label me as a nerd when I scored good marks in the exam. That makes me think that this adjective is secured for people who are good in studies, are found in college library, reading college books. (I never did so, still she called me that!! Stupid cow!!)
Good books still get a lot of appreciation and many still read. I still remember when the last part of harry potter was being released, children were in line since morning 7. That was supposed to be cool, the last time I checked. As a matter of fact I see a tremendous increase in the number of writers as compared to before. I guess, they wouldn’t write if there was no one to read.
Reading -a habit or inclination?
